Reminder :)

Hey! Just wanted to remind you that I have a new blog :)

I don't blog much these days, because school keeps me really busy, but there is a tad more activity on my other blog. Since I can update from my phone, I post a little bit more over there. Some more updates on what I'm doing, even when I don't have anything fancy to show you... Just to let you know I'm still alive :)

I have said that I'll keep this blog updated with major news and stuff, but now that Blogger has gone and changed the layout to something that is even more confusing than the old thing, I don't know... I suspect that this place will soon become pretty quiet. So please follow along to my new WordPress site :) Even if you don't have a WP account, you can still follow the blog, you just have to add the address to your reading list manually.

Moving the blog

Yes, that's right. I've decided to move this blog. Well, not exactly, because this will still be here, but from now on I consider my main craft blog to be my new one over at WordPress. Had some trouble with Blogger last night (long story short: Blogger ruined a rather long blog post, I got angry and decided I don't like Blogger anymore), so I imported all my posts from this blog into a new one. You can find it HERE :)

If you don't like WordPress for some reason, don't worry! I'll probably be double-posting for a long time, although I'll post on my new blog first, just to make sure I have a backup in case Blogger flips out again. Heh.

I have moved two of my other blogs as well, Bollan's blog and my tatting blog. The old ones will remain, just like this one, but I'm not sure how much they will be updated from now on. To be honest I prefer to post on WordPress, both because it's simply easier and because it works better on my phone.

So, I hope to see some of you over there :D

Craftiness of 2011 :)

First of all, let me wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! I know I'm a little late, but we've had our family visiting for Christmas, and after they all left, I kind of collapsed and haven't done anything productive for days. But I'm back now, rested and ready for the new year ahead. Will have lots of studying to do this spring (taking an extra class to make up for skipping one this fall), but hopefully I'll be able to blog a little as well :)

To make up for neglecting my blog the past months, here is a summary of the craftiness I did last year :) I didn't think I'd accomplished much, but looking back, I realize that I've done quite a lot! Starting with my own designs in chronological order:

My aunt asked me to make two little bugs for her, so I made these. Mini versions of the Great Big ones. I'm working on the patterns, but I have to remake them to get proper pictures. Hopefully the patterns will be done before Easter :)

Cute Little Dudes - Trick or Treat! vol.1. I had another set planned, but ran out of time (too much school work!). Will save the second set for next Halloween :)

A friend of mine wanted me to make a great big dragon that he could give to a kid for his birthday, so I made this. It's huge! Arms and legs are jointed. I was told the kid's birthday was in October, so I rushed to finish it, but then it turned out the day was not until November. Oh well. At least the kid was happy. From what I heard, the dragon was being fed dinner as soon as it arrived. That's a good sign, right?

Crocheted and felted witch's cauldron, a free pattern for Halloween. I had originally planned to make up lots of creepy stuff to put in it (eyeballs, severed fingers, bat wings, etc.), but once again I ran out of time. Will save the ideas for next time :)

As a Christmas present, I made this heart (from my free heart pattern) that I filled with nice smelling things and put in a pretty bowl with some pretty white stones.

And the very last thing I finished last year was a remake of the Kitty Princess, the first pattern I ever made and published. Gave it to a cousin for Christmas. I am in the process of rewriting the pattern and adding new photos, and hopeully it'll be done before school starts in about two weeks :)

So. That was all of my designs. I did some other things too, but a lot of the projects I started last year are still in progress, so I have no pictures to show you... I will post the few that I have, though :) Again, in chronological order:

In the beginning of January I took out Rose Langlitz's book Tasty Crochet and started crocheting some food. I was obsessed for a while, but I only managed to complete two things, a pear and a salami/lettuce sandwich:

I have more half-finished food items lying around, but no pictures... 

After that I knitted a new bag for my rpg dice, the Dice Bag of Doom! Pattern free for download on Ravelry.

My next obsession was bugs, as Lesley Stanfield's new book came out, 75 birds, butterflies & beautiful beasties. I made a black slug, plus some butterflies and caterpillars that I pinned to a cork board:

Then I moved on to Hansi Singh's bugs. I started with a praying mantis that never got finished, but I made earthworms, a sea slug, Kraken (giant squid) and a Blackdevil anglerfish:

 

 

Again, I have lots of WiPs that hopefully some day will be done. They are just too pretty to be stashed away in a bag...

During the summer I got started on June Gilbank's dinosaurs. I think I've started about five of them, but none are done yet. It's just silly, really. On one (the Parasaurolophus), all that remains is sewing on one last leg! Sigh. I think I have an aversion against finishing things :/

I found this really cool knitting pattern on Ravelry, of a dancing goddess figure:

The pattern itself is very simple (knit in the round, and it consists of only two parts, so very little sewing is required), but I wasn't quite happy with my knitting (uneven stitches and a few holes - I'm no good at knitting in the round on double-pointed needles!), so I decided to felt it. Unfortunately I felted it after stuffing, so it almost didn't felt at all. It just became sort of lumpy and disproportionate. I wanted to make more of these, but I'll have to do it differently next time.

The last project I finished last year (not counting the Christmas presents) was this little dice bag:

The pattern is Deep Sea Flower Dice Bag, found HERE. Well, to be honest, it isn't actually 100% finished, since I haven't made the cord yet. I just got so tired of knitting with that stupid yarn that has absolutely NO stretch what so ever, I just tied it with a piece of yarn to be done with it. Love the pattern and the bag, though. Plan to make more some time, when I can get my hands on some lovely multi-colored Noro, which the pattern is designed for.

And that was all. Whew! Longest post ever... (It's taken over four hours to write!) Well. My plan now is to finish the patterns for the things I made last year, preferably as soon as possible. I'll have a lot less time once school starts, and I think that if I don't finish them now, I probably never will. So one of my new year's resolutions is to finish all my Bugs, Dudes and any other patterns before I start any new ones. Have lots of projects going right now, but no new Bugs or Dudes before the others are done. Period. Will try to post again soon :)

Happy Halloween + free pattern :)

Hi! How are you all doing? Looking forward to Halloween this weekend? I've been really busy and stressed out these past weeks, but I've still managed to cook up a new free pattern for you! A crocheted and felted witch's cauldron, complete with lid :) 

It's a fairly simple pattern, and if you are just a little quicker than I am (which doesn't take much), you can easily make this up in a couple of evenings and have it done and filled with goodies by Monday :)

You find the pattern on my other blog. I would have posted it last night (to give you more time to make it), but I had trouble uploading the pictures, and in the end I had to go to bed. But now it's finally up (and added to Ravelry's database), and I can get on with my math homework. Have an assignment due Wednesday, and I'm clueless... So you probably won't hear more from me in about a week, when I might have another pattern ready. We'll see :)

Halloween Dudes

Anyone else getting ready for Halloween? I plan Halloween patterns every year, but this is the first time I have actually managed to get a pattern ready in good time before the holiday. Not much use making a pattern if no one has time to make it...

So here they are, an all new set of Cute Little Dudes: Trick or Treat vol.1. The pattern is available both from Etsy and Ravelry :)


There is a scarecrow, a vampire bat and a cute little imp. The bat wings require some shaping (i.e. counting), but other than that, these Dudes are on the same difficulty level as all the others. Hope you like them :)

Ps.: I have another set planned, but time will tell if I can get them ready within reasonable time for anyone else to make them. Have lots of homework to to as well...

Reclaiming my craft space & new blog

Wow! Can't believe I've been gone this long, it sure wasn't planned. If I remember correctly I haven't posted anything here since January! I guess I warned you that I would be busy with school this semester, but I believe I've lost a couple of followers anyway. Oh, well.

Anyway, what I'm here to tell you is that from now on I will try to stick to craft related stuff on this blog, the way I meant it to be when I first created it. It all started a few weeks ago when I got a new phone. It's one of those fancy ones that let you go online and stuff (and not to mention play Angry Birds!), so I thought I'd try some mobile blogging. As it turned out, the Blogger app refused to accept the ymail address that's connected to this blog, so I'd have to register a new blog with a gmail address to make it work... I tried that, but after a while I decided that I wasn't happy with the Blogger app, and wanted to try something completely different. Like WordPress. It seems more complicated than Blogger, but once you get used to it, it really isn't. You can't customize everything, like you can with Blogger, but hopefully it'll come soon. So HERE is my new personal blog, where I post whatever crosses my mind - good or bad. I won't put up a permanent link on this blog because it's personal (and I don't have my name on there), so this is the only time you'll get the link. Hope I'll see you there :)

Despite being busy with school (and exams, the first of which is only days away!) I have managed to make some new crochet patterns. The next post will be about them, I promise :D

Happy New Year & new Bugs :)

Happy New Year everyone! Hope you all had a nice evening last night :) We didn't really celebrate much, we just had dinner and some friends over for a Warhammer roleplaying session. At midnight we went out to look at everyone else's fireworks, froze our bums off and went back in and played some more :D

I use these sessions to crochet "boring" things, like the legs for Great Big Bugs or things that go round and round for ages, and I got quite a lot done yesterday.  Of course I ran out of yarn and have to go shopping on Monday (because everything is closed today)... Almost done with two new bugs that'll show up later this week if all goes well. Will try to do as much as possible before I start school :)

But here is my newest pattern - the last of 2010: Great Big Scorpion!

I hadn't planned him long, he just sort of happened because I wanted to make a scorpion for my sister-in-law for Christmas (she's a Scorpio). So he was finished on Christmas Eve, but the pattern wasn't ready until yesterday. Among other things I forgot to photograph some body parts before I attached them, and I had to remake them for the shots. Thankfully one of my next Bugs is going to have yellow legs as well, so I didn't have to make it just for one picture... Yeah, I know I'm lazy like that :p 

Anyway, the scorpion is based on the Deathstalker for those who are interested, and I chose this because of the colors. I felt it was time for something yellow again :) In difficulty, this Bug shouldn't be more complicated than the rest, except for a new stitch to make the segments of the body: back post single crochet. Plus, there are a lot of parts to put together... But I had fun making it, and I hope you like it too :) As usual, you can find it both on Ravelry and Etsy.

Potholders galore!

I've been very busy lately, because one day I suddenly decided to make something for everyone in my family for Christmas! Potholders seemed like a good idea and I had some cool yarn I wanted to try, so I started making loads of them... The first I made really big, because I only wanted to make one:

I didn't realize until it was half done that my choice of yarn was a bit off. The yarn does not take heat (no ironing) and needs to be hand washed. Great. So I got some ordinary cotton yarn and made a padding for the back. I think it'll work, I just need to inform the recipient... The pattern is found HERE.

I already had the yarn for a second potholder, so I decided to do the same with that one. The back is padded with darker brown yarn, as I couldn't find an exact match:

The pattern is the same as the first one, but I ran out of time and had to make it one round smaller. Don't think the recipient will mind, though :)

I found some other brand of fancy yarn I wanted to try, so I made two pairs of small potholders from this pattern. The yarn has something called 'milk fibers' in it (whatever that is), and can only be washed on 30 degrees C. Hmpf! So I made cotton backings for these potholders as well, beige for the gray/beige ones and black for the orange/purple ones:

Finally I used some of the leftover cotton and made up an apple wedge potholder for my grandmother:

It's very simple; just a circle with the last round done in apple skin color. The pits were crocheted separately and sewn on before I folded the thing in half and sewed along the green edge. Tada :)

I had to rush these because I had to get them shipped in the mail before December 16th. I made it (barely), so now I've been relaxing for a few days with a project for myself, which I'll blog about later :) I still have a few Christmas presents to finish, though, but they don't have to be wrapped until Christmas Eve! Heh :p

Excuses, excuses...

Just thought I'd post a little something about why I've been gone so long.. There are two main reasons. One is that I've become completely hooked on tatting since this summer, so I started a tatting blog to have a place to show off the things I make and buy (there has been some serious shuttle shopping this fall!) because there is just so much of it, and I didn't want to clutter up this blog completely :) This place is mainly for crochet, hedgehogs (of course!), some random craftiness and bits of my life.

(Warning: Long story ahead! Skip to the last paragraph if you're not interested...)

The other reason is that I've been sick for a while. I think I mentioned in the Pumpkin post that I had some wrist pains a few weeks ago, so I stopped crocheting and tatting for a few days as soon as the pumpkins were done, and the pain went away. A few days later my right breast started feeling really warm and sore, and then I found some lumps, so I immediately went to the doctor to check it out. I figured it was an infection of some sort, and I really thought it would be easy enough to get a prescription of antibiotics and be done with it. But nooo... The doctor examined me for about four seconds and told me I had something called Fibrocystic breast disease/disorder (or something), which was fairly common and harmless. And there was nothing to be done about it other than wait until it went away. I was sceptical at first, but then another doctor came and took a blood test to check for infections and the test came back negative, so I finally believed the doctor. He gave me a referral to get a mammogram and/or an ultrasound to confirm what he suspected, and then I went home, happy that it was nothing serious.

Curious me went home and looked up the condition online and read all about it. Pain was normal... So when the pain started getting worse, I didn't think much of it - I was going to get it looked at soon anyway. Or so I thought... The clinic that received my referral managed to lose it in a pile of papers or something, so I didn't get an appointment until two weeks later. By then my breast was swollen and red (the redness appeared the last two or three days before), and there was no way I was going to let them squish it in the mammogram machine of horror! The doctor took one look at it and said I didn't need to :) He did the ultrasound and said it was an infection that needed immediate treatment, and he made an appointment for me at the hospital the next morning.

I don't want to get too graphic with the rest of the story - let's just say it includes getting stabbed with a VERY large needle (twice!), and then a scalpel when the needles didn't work... The first treatment only made things worse, despite me chewing antibiotics like candy, and the second treatment just wasn't enough. Now I've been to the hospital five times in the past week, and finally it seems to be healing up nicely. Got a week left of Penicillin and going back for a check-up next Thursday, and that's it :) Crossing fingers...

Whew! Long rant. Hope I didn't make you queasy... Now onto something more pleasant: I've done some yarn shopping today! Feeling that much better :) Got more yarn to make some new Great Big Bugs. Progress is slow with the one I'm currently working on - I've lost count of how many times I unraveled it - so perhaps it is best to do something else in between. After my wrist started acting up I've been taking it slow with the crocheting - only doing a few rounds a day - so if you get bored with the silence in this place and want to see what I've been up to you could always check out my tatting place :)

Pumpkins!

Here are two pumpkins I've made over the last few days. The small one is for PlanetJune's Fall CAL, and the big one is for Itsy Bitsy Spider's Pumpkin Patch CAL. 

I almost couldn't finish them because of wrist pain, but I only had the stems left, and I decided to do them anyway. Carefully, and only one stem a day :) I think the pain (beginning tendonitis) is because I've mostly been tatting for a long time now, and the sudden and intense crocheting was suddenly very straining on my wrists...

PlanetJune's pumpkin is crocheted with a lovely soft acrylic yarn (Idena Twins, now unfortunately discontinued) and crochet hook 4.5mm. The pattern was easy to follow and the pumpkin could easily be made in a few hours :) I had plans for making a couple of the Pocket Amis as well (the witch and ghost), but because of my wrists I think I'll be satisfied with just the pumpkin. I would really love to make more of those and line them up in the window for Halloween :) We'll see how it goes... The big pumpkin was crocheted with the same bulky wool yarn I use for my Great Big Bugs, also with a 4.5mm hook:

This pumpkin could easily be mistaken for an ordinary pumpkin, albeit a very pale one... Let me tell you that he is not :)

This is Archie. He is a very special little albino pumpkin who needs glasses because his eyesight is a little poor. He feels like all the other pumpkins are looking at him and teasing him for his glasses. Not cool! If anything, glasses make you smarter, and your nose doesn't look so naked :) Archie is a really sweet little guy who's going to be an ophthalmologist when he grows up. He has one really good friend, and they stick together like - well - pumpkins!

CALs and give-aways and stuff

First of all, I really need to thank Greenpixey for the lovely prize I won from her give-away in July. Thank you! What I won was a little heart shaped tin of mint candy to give to my boyfriend :) 

Also in the package was a surprise that I decided was just for me :p A yummy bar of milk chocolate! It was gone within minutes, hihi :)

The package arrived several weeks ago, but I waited to post about it since the mints were going to be a surprise, and I'm not sure whether my bf reads my blog or not. And then, of course, I forgot... I remembered to post about it now because my boyfriend came home from the library the other day and gave me the empty tin to keep little treasures in :)

I'm currently participating in another give-away that (hopefully) has not ended yet. At Artikaur's blog you can enter to win a ball of pretty blue crochet/tatting thread:

So, the CALs... Well, I never got any further on my alpaca for PlanetJune's summer CAL :( I feel really bad that I got the pattern cheaper than I normally would, and then I never had time to make it... The CAL has now ended, and you can see all the finished alpacas and violets HERE.

Finally, there's a new CAL that's just about to start - a halloween themed fall CAL at Itsy Bitsy Spider (who also hosted the Great Owl CAL earlier). This time we're making pumpkins :) 

We are to decorate the pumpkins however we want, and at the end there will be a contest with a prize. Whoever makes the coolest pumpkin wins! I have to concrete ideas for my pumpkin yet, but I'll come up with something as I crochet along :)

I'm still here

Just thought I'd post a little something to let you all know that I'm still alive :) I just finished taking notes from a really long chapter about eukaryotic cells, and I thought I'd take a small break before I start doing the exercises. *sigh* I read through the chapter last week, but for some reason I didn't take notes. Don't ask why... Next week I plan to start on the math. I haven't done it sooner because I need to borrow a fancy calculator from a friend who won't arrive in town before Sunday :/ Hope I have time to do it all. I figure that if I don't spend more than two weeks on each chapter, I'll get through the whole book by the end of November. Fingers crossed :)

Though I really need to focus on my studying this fall, I hope I'll be able to get some crafting done as well (I have to do something, or I'll probably go insane). I'm almost done with a new Great Big Bug - a firefly - and I have another one started. Plus I'd like to make another firefly as a mate to the first one. I have only four legs left to make! I'll do my best to finish it by this week :) For the body I've used glow-in-the-dark yarn (yellow Bernat) for the first time! I ordered it from here, but I'm not sure I'd recommend it to people ouside of US or Canada, the shipping cost was insane compared to the price of the yarn :/ I tried ordering another brand (white Nightlights) from another site, but they had problems with overseas shipping, so I didn't really have a choice. Of course I could have waited until they had their issues fixed, but you know me :p Anyway, here's a sneak peek at the firefly:

She's quite large, and the back end really does glow! I'm pretty pleased with this one :)

Oh, another thing... I've managed to get tangled up in a craft project with a deadline of  August 31st, so that naturally has priority right now. Not sure how much I can talk about it yet, so if you feel like I haven't posted much craftyness lately it's not because I haven't done anything :) I promise I'll tell you more about it when I know how it turns out!

And then there's the tatting :) I'm hooked! On the bus here I started a new project, and during the next two or three days I finished my first "big" item, a crocodile bookmark :) Thought it would be cool to put in my biology book. The pattern is called "Alligator bookmark" from the book Animal Bookmarks - A Tatted Zoo by Dianna Stevens, but I think it looks more like a crocodile than an alligator. I like crocodiles better :)

Bookmarks are both practical and fun to make, and I think it's becoming a new obsession :) I'm not at all a fast tatter, so I can only make a few rings and chains every night, but I've just finished a thistle bookmark from this pattern. It doesn't say how many colors to use, but I made mine in green and pink. Pictures will probably be up on Flickr and Facebook tonight or tomorrow :)

Changes :)

Today I decided it was time for some blog redecorating again. I started with Bollan's blog, which took me about two hours to get right, even with the new and easier Blogger tool feature thingy (I've had a glass of wine and can't remember what it's called!)... Finally I was able to give her blog three columns and space enough for both the gadgets and the blog posts! I still have some minor things to add, but they probably won't change things too much :) Oh, and by the way, can you guess what the background image on her blog is? I haven't added it myself, it was already in the default backgrounds added by Blogger :D

While I was at it I decided to change my own blog as well, but not as much as Bollan's. I've recently developed a thing for the color purple (not the movie, though it's wonderful and you should see it!), so when I found this background while searching for something for Bollan, I just had to have it. So there :)

I think my pattern blog is up next, but I think those changes will have to wait a little while. Tomorrow I'm going back out to my grandmother's, and while I'm there I can't really do much on the internet... Some time next weekend I'm going back to where I live during the school semesters, so I'll have to catch up with my online life then. See ya :) *waves goodbye*

Worst song ever!

Today has been a really long day at work! Not because of the hours, but because every second I spent cleaning I had the most annoying song ever stuck on my brain :( I get songs stuck very easily, and some of them stay for quite some time. The longest I've ever had the same song was a whole semester, about five or six months... Beethoven's ninth symphony. Not the worst song, but still annoying enough if you listen to it for too long. Today it was a song called "Oah" by Alexander Rybak, the guy who won the Eurovision Song Contest for Norway last year. Thankfully not with that song! I feel like such a traitor for hating his guts (and his songs!), but I can't help it. I just can't stand listening to pop music for too long, or I'll go crazy, I'm more of a rock 'n' roll kind of person :)

Anyway, this song has been playing on TV a lot lately, because the guy has a new album coming out, plus I sometimes hear bits and pieces of it when I'm cleaning people's offices and they have the radio on. I guess the melody is fair enough, but the lyrics make me want to cry! I first heard the song when I was at the dentist, and I almost choked when it came on the radio: "Oah, I love you Moa, you're way too young for me, but I don't mind!"...


Oh, so HE doesn't mind? Well, that makes everything okay! Hmpf! This guy is only 23 or something, which makes me wonder how old the girl is (or was when he wrote the song)... *shiver* If you should want to listen to this atrocity yourself, you can follow this link (haven't listened to it myself, I just can't, but there are others in case this is crap). 


At lunch I couldn't take it anymore and complained to my mother. She tried to give me "Aiken Drum" ("Åkken Bom" in Norwegian) instead, which also gets stuck in your head really easily, but even that had to give way after a while, to the horrible OOOH AAAH, I love you MOOOO-AAAAH.... Didn't make cleaning toilets any more fun! *sigh* I even tried humming the Hamster Dance song to myself, but that didn't help much either, now I have all three songs in my head playing on top of each other :/ But the hamsters sure are cute! :D


There, just had to get this out of my system! Sorry for the long and relatively pointless rant (and apologies to any Rybak fans out there), but I hope the song will disappear from my head soon! Hoping for a better day (and song!) tomorrow :)

Two CALs and a "feature" :)

As you may have noticed by the links in my right sidebar I'm participating in two CALs this summer :) I've already shown you the beginning of my owl for Itsy Bitsy Spiders Great Owl Crochet-along. I finished the owl a while ago, and I made even more changes to the little bird: added embroidered eyelashes and feathers on the belly :)

Now the crocheting part of the Owl CAL is over (it ended on Sunday, I think), but there is going to be a swap with some of the finished owls. Signing up for the swap was optional, so I'm keeping my owl, but I really enjoy seeing lots of different owls together :) Click HERE to see Karla's post about the birds. Makes me want to make lots more owls and have them roosting on a shelf in my apartment :) I'm sure Bollan wouldn't mind! Speaking of The Great Boll: she was actually mentioned in a blog post along with my owl for the CAL :) She's so proud! Even Bollan's own blog was mentioned :) We are both very grateful to be featured on Itsy Bitsy Spider's blog!

The second CAL I'm in is PlanetJune's Summer CAL, where you can crochet either alpacas or a pot of African Violets. I am of course making the alpaca! I've started the CAL a little late, because I was so sure my mother had some alpaca yarn in her stash, but I couldn't find it (not in the right colors, anyway - unless I want to make a blue one!), so today I finally went out and bought a ball of lovely light brown alpaca yarn :) Expensive, though... So far I've made the ears, muzzle and head, and was ready to assemble the face, but then I discovered that I don't have suitable safety eyes :( I have the right size, but the posts are both too thick and too long (and too hard to cut off), so I'll have to come up with a different solution... No pictures of the alpaca yet, but I'll post some as soon as I've made some real progress - I have until August 31st to finish it :)
